From "love to fight" to "will fight" a zipper to see the high-tech manufacturing in Shanghai

What is the difference between a zipper that goes to space and an ordinary zipper? The answer can be found in Shanghai: the zipper is made of a different material and has a different strength of bonding force.
In October 2021, the Shenzhou 13 manned spacecraft was successfully launched, and the zipper on the cabin pressure suit worn by the three astronauts was developed and produced by Shanghai-based SHANGHAI JIN DUN INDUSTRIAL CO.
Initially, JINDUN did not know that the zipper it produced would be used on the astronauts' cabin pressure suits, but it only remembered that the other party came over to talk about cooperation and put forward a series of technical requirements. JINDUN had previously made professional zippers for pilot garments, but the requirements raised by the other party were higher than those for zippers for pilot garments.
General pilot clothing zipper is mainly anti-corrosion to be strong. In doing the salt spray test, the indicators are higher than the requirements of ordinary zippers. Zhang said that ordinary zippers may require 24 hours of immersion in 8% concentration of salt water without any change in physical properties; while the zippers of pilot garments require 48 hours of immersion in 15% concentration of salt water without any change.
Considering the possible effects of the space environment on the zipper, the material of the cabin pressure suit zipper has higher strength in terms of wear resistance, corrosion resistance and radiation resistance compared to ordinary zippers. In order to find this suitable material, JINDUN's Science and Technology Resource Department communicated with many universities in China and finally reached a cooperation with University of Science and Technology Beijing.
In addition, in space, the cabin pressure suit zipper will bloom if the joint is not strong; but if the joint is too strong, the zipper will not be easy to pull because of the excessive resistance. In order to find a suitable value between the two, JINDUN cooperated with the Quanzhou Equipment Manufacturing Institute of the West China Academy of Sciences, and first used the Institute's simulation system to set up the parameters involved in the production of zippers on the computer to simulate production, and then JINDUN adjusted the production mold according to the simulated values to produce the first samples, and then used the simulation system to optimize the first samples. Then JINDUN adjusts the production mold according to the simulated values, produces the first samples, and then uses the simulation system to optimize the first samples.
The parameters of the production mold is one of the core competitiveness of zipper production. Zhang said that Japan's Yoshida zipper, often referred to as YKK, currently holds a near monopoly in the global market, and one of Yoshida's core competencies is that the company develops and produces its own molds for zipper manufacturing and masters the relevant production parameters.
These key technologies are not obtained by simply buying someone else's machinery and dismantling it, then taking drawings and tracing them to a 1:1 ratio to re-produce them. Zhang explained, because metal, nylon and other materials have different elasticity, in the stamping, cooling and other processing processes, the size will change. The force of stamping, speed and the characteristics of the material itself are all factors to consider. "If any of the values are not correct, the zipper produced will not work."
JINDUN initially started as a home-based business, like many manufacturing companies in Shanghai, and the molds used to produce zippers were purchased from overseas. If the machine is damaged, it needs to be sent to the overseas manufacturers for repair, which takes a long time and has high economic costs. Once the manufacturer did not sell the molds and machines to the company, the company could not maintain production.
In order to master the production autonomy, JINDUN set up a special scientific research team to attack the mold production technology. After continuous attempts, JINDUN broke the technical bottleneck of key molds for the first time, and the company has since been selling not only zippers but also molds to its peers, Zhang said.
After tasting the sweetness of scientific and technological research and development, JINDUN has set up a special technology research and development center. "We have counted that the production of a zipper involves 15 majors in primary disciplines and 44 majors in secondary disciplines." Zhang says the R&D center's Technology Resource Department finds universities and research institutions that rank high in these specialties, establishes contact and cooperation mechanisms with them, regularly sends people to attend academic conferences and forums in related industries, and tracks the latest scientific research achievements and developments in the industry, forming a reserve of scientific and technological resources within the company.
Currently, JINDUN's mid- to high-end products account for about 70% of production, with an average annual revenue of about 1.5 billion yuan. Just JINDUN's No. 3 zipper products, for example, the average daily output is about 1.8 million, and can produce up to 2.2 million in the peak season.
Lin Red, the head of Shanghai Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, told CYD- CYD that the road that Shanghai manufacturing enterprises are currently taking is the road of high-tech, "high-tech development is also a trend of global manufacturing development, especially in Europe and the United States, is fighting to return to revitalize the manufacturing industry through automation, intelligent technology and advanced manufacturing technology applications."
China's manufacturing enterprises are also in urgent need of intelligent, digital upgrade. Lin red said that the new generation of labor force employment is more inclined to mobility and flexibility, compared with into the factory, many young people choose to send delivery, courier or run online dating car, only rely on open source to solve the problem of enterprise production labor, increasingly difficult. In the future, more efforts should be devoted to cutting costs and solving the problems of labor shortage and rising labor cost faced by China's manufacturing industry through machine for labor and even developing unmanned factories.
Shanghai JIN DUN INDUSTRIAL CO.,LTD in Shanghai is also trying to upgrade intelligently. In the 5G intelligent workshop of SHANGHAI JIN DUN INDUSTRIAL CO.,LTD, a reporter from China Youth Daily - China Youth Network saw that in the workshop of nearly 20,000 square meters, there were only a few technicians who controlled the equipment and overhauled it, and the rest all relied on the automatic operation of machinery. In the storage and out of storage links, because of intelligent three-dimensional storage and transfer car, improve the utilization of factory storage space, saving the time cost of trucks waiting for goods. According to reports, the previous truck pulling goods to wait in a long queue, such as personnel in the warehouse with orders to count the last carload of goods, the next car to enter; now 5G intelligent workshop to open multiple shipping port, the driver according to the display screen above the shipping port to find the location, the rear of the car aligned with the shipping port, intelligent equipment automatically boxed, now to now to mention.
Lin red said, in Shanghai, a successful enterprise benchmarking case, can drive a large number of enterprises have to follow suit, compared to the government level guidance, the effect is more immediate. Therefore, the Shanghai government in promoting the digitalization of manufacturing enterprises, intelligent transformation process, in addition to policy support, service leadership, there is a conscious effort to plan and cultivate a number of intelligent manufacturing, industrial Internet application demonstration in various industries, to create a number of industrial Internet service platform for small and medium enterprises to empower the digital transformation of industry, and ultimately achieve the effect of business to attract business, business with business.
