The difference between duck down and goose down

"The smell, what's the difference?"

We know that ducks are omnivorous animals, whether roughage or green feed, or insects, earthworms, fish and shrimp can be used as food for ducks. Because the food contains more fat, so the duck down oil content is more, generally with a fishy smell, the industry called "fat fishy" or "duck fox smell", so the duck down more or less will be a little taste.

Goose feed is mainly plant-based, and general weeds and aquatic plants are available for geese to eat. Therefore, goose down has less oil content and almost no odor.

The odor has always been the focus of comparison between goose down and duck down. Duck down will be slightly smelly, in order to remove the odor, in the process of decontamination, degreasing, some processing plants even use deodorant, under normal circumstances the newly bought duck down quilt needs to be dried in a ventilated environment a few times, in the collection process should also be often taken out to dry.

"Fluffiness, what's the difference?"

Whether it is goose down or duck down, there are many factors that affect the down, under the same conditions of down content.

1, the proportion of down and down silk: down in the down and down silk ratio of high and low will affect the fluffiness of the down high and low. The higher the proportion of down, the better the fluffiness, the better the quality of the down, and conversely, the higher the proportion of down in the silk, the worse the fluffiness. Because of the limitations of the down extraction technology and washing process, it is impossible to have down with 100% down content. The down content can reach 95%, even if the quality is very good down.

2, the size of the down: down in the size of the down will also affect the fluffiness of the down high or low. The larger the down, the higher the fluffiness, and conversely the smaller the down the fluffiness is reduced. In comparison to mature goose down and duck down, goose down has long filaments, large fluff, higher fluff, and high comfort, so the quality is better and the price is relatively expensive.

3, moisture rate: the moisture rate in the down, that is, the degree of dryness, will also have an impact on the fluffiness, dry down is always better than less dry down fluffiness.

4, oxygen consumption index: the oxygen consumption index of the down will also have an impact on the fluffiness of the down.

"All the same, keeping warm?"

Duck down can produce up to 3 seasons a year, but goose down only produces 1 season a year, and the amount of down produced by each goose is smaller. The higher cost of goose breeding determines that the price of goose down is much higher than that of duck down.

"Lifespan , how long are they?"

Goose down lasts longer than duck down. Duck down lasts about 10 years, but goose down lasts more than 15 years.

"Resilience , is there a big difference?"

Relax the natural down comforter and lay it flat, let it recover naturally for three minutes, then press the comforter with your hand, then release your hand, if it bounces back to its original state quickly, it is good. The faster the rebound speed, the better the quality of the down. If there is no elasticity at all, the filling material is likely to be chicken feathers or other long pieces of crushed hair. In contrast, the softness and bending of goose down is better.

So, strictly speaking, it is not that goose down is better than duck down, but only that the down with higher indexes above is of better quality. In most cases, these indices are higher for goose down than for duck down.
